Is one of the most extraordinary draftsmen, and one of the most gifted artists of our times. His knowledge is vast and his paintings and drawings are exquisitely executed.
Tony is the author of one of the best-selling books on figure drawing.
The Artist’s Complete Guide to Figure Drawing: A Contemporary Perspective on the Classical Tradition was published in 2000.

He has received exhibition prizes and fellowships from the Salmagundi Club and Art Students League in NYC, and from the La Napoule Foundation (France). Tony is the founder of the Ryder Studio School in Santa Fe, NM.

Since 1988, he has taught at the New York Academy of Art, the Art Students League in NYC, the Gage Academy, BACAG, and across the United States in a variety of private schools and organizations.

He graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy, and went to art school at the Rhode Island School of Design, and the Art Students League (NYC). From 1983 to 1989 he studied oil painting and drawing from life in New York City and in France with master artist and teacher Ted Seth Jacobs.

In 1985 Ted asked him to substitute teach his figure drawing class at the New York Academy of Art. Since that time, he has taught life drawing and painting at the Art Student’s League of New York, and the Seattle Academy of Fine Art, and in many other schools around the country, and in France, to countless students of all levels.

“The things I learned from Ted are a priceless heritage, a truly sublime, highly informed and culturally refined approach to portraiture and the study of the figure, rooted in a continuous teaching tradition reaching back to the time of the Renaissance.”

Teacher Mentor Taught at BACAG 2001-2005 provided the inspiration that lead to the creation of Bay Area Classical Artist Atelier. Continues to support and encourage the progression of the contemporary classical movement.
