Quarterly Classes Instructor Linda Dulaney (Daytime Classes), Noah Buchanan (Evening Classes)-

Evan by Linda Dulaney Finalist ARC 2013 International Compitition

Our classes at BACAA, offer the opportunity for intensive study, working from nature. Students will learn techniques and process to see and work from life. The process includes structure, proportion & how to correctly block in the outside graphic shape, drawing the contour and modeling the form.

The techniques that Linda Dulaney teaches will help students develop their artwork, conveying the natural organic forms and science of light on the form. Students will have the opportunity to work methodically through a process to compare what they see and draw from nature.

Linda’s teaching experience and artistry comes from years of study with some of the greatest realist artists. Her most influential teachers were Ted Seth Jacobs, Tony Ryder, and Michael Grimaldi.
During the classes students have the opportunity to further develop their artwork by working from our beautiful cast collection and master copies. Students have the option to work independently to create a portfolio from the model in long pose.

We work from life, live models, drapery, casts, still life.
We do not use photographs as references in our sessions with exception to master copies.

Schedule is now open for weekly classes and Quarterly Classes. Daytime Classes are taught by Linda Dulaney. Please scroll below to see each individual class. Small concentrated classes.

James Gleason, juror, loved your work.  I’m pleased to let you know that your beautiful drawing “Meave” was his first choice for one of the three awards.  He said this about the piece:  “Beautiful line work as well as structure and proportion of the head drawing.”  If he could have given more than one award per artist, he would’ve given “Anna” an Honorable Mention, as well.  Congratulations, Linda S!

Figure Drawing and Painting Class in the Life Room.
Cast Class in the Cast Studio for Begginers to the Buchanan Studio at BACAA

2 Spots remaining in Life Room only!
Intermediate to Advanced only.

Cast Class full to capacity for all begginers to the Buchanan Studio at BACAA

Dates: September 17-November 19, 2019
Hours: 6:30-9:30 p.m.
Please fill out the registration form and finilize your payment.

Studying under figurative artist Noah Buchanan, students will study classical methods of drawing and painting the human figure from life. The Buchanan Studio at BACAA is unique for its instruction of painting techniques of 16th and 17th century Europe, and holds the works of Caravaggio, Rubens, Van Dyck, Velázquez, and Rembrandt as the apotheosis of great painting. The study of Artistic Anatomy was paramount to these artists, and plays an important role in the program.
The curriculum of training for The Buchanan Studio follows a classical ladder-based model of learning, which starts with foundational topics in drawing, and progresses towards painting the figure from life in full color. Students will receive instruction directly from the instructor as well as observation of the instructor’s ongoing demonstrations during class time. Beginning students will also receive guidance and coaching from an instructor’s assistant.
Beginning students devote themselves to the tradition of Cast Drawing (the practice of drawing from Greek, Roman, Italianate, and French Academic sculpture), while focusing on drawing techniques in graphite on white paper, as well as black charcoal and white chalk on toned paper. The practice of Cast Drawing allows students to build a solid foundation in the fundamental drawing skills of Shape, Value and Form. Cast drawing will take place in The Cast Room at BACAA, which offers several different casts for students to select from. The cast room at BACAA will maintain consistent/unchanging location, positioning and lighting of the casts to help nurture accuracy in student drawings. In addition to instructed sessions, beginning students will be offered optional Saturday afternoon access to the Cast Room to further develop drawings beyond class time.
Intermediate students who have demonstrated strength in Cast Drawing are invited to work in the Life Room with the studio model. Models’ poses will alternate every 10 weeks between The Nude, and Portraiture. Students who are new to the Life Room start by making drawings in graphite or Charcoal from the model.
Repeat intermediate students are invited to begin making oil paintings from the model in Grisaille (Black and White). This stage of learning helps the student form a bridge between drawing skills and Paint Handling (all of the logistics and proficiency in using oil paint).
Advanced students at the Buchanan Studio are invited to paint the figure from life with a full color palette. At this stage, students are afforded the rare opportunity to study 16th and 17th century painting techniques found in the works of Caravaggio, Rubens, Van Dyck, Velásquez, and Rembrandt. This practice of painting is known as Indirect Painting, and uses underpainting techniques such as Imprimatura, Velatura, Working Glazes, and Finishing Glazes.
With this classical skill building approach to drawing and painting the figure, the Buchanan Studio at BACAA hopes to give students the keys to progressing beyond the classroom to making challenging figurative work with content and narrative.
All begginers to Noah’s atelier at BACAA must begin in the cast studio.
**In addition to training in classical drawing and painting techniques, Noah’s classes are known for their attention to Artistic Anatomy; each class meeting the entire studio will come together, mid-evening, for a 15-minute discussion of the musculoskeletal system (bones and muscles).

“I also wanted to share with you that I used the concept of reference points in the lessons that I taught to my beginning art students, most of whom were certain that they had never drawn before and doubted they could ever draw. In one week, everyone was drawing beautifully from observation! I made the connection to looking at constellations… stars. I had them just draw constellations like the “Big Dipper” and others from projections on a screen and we could just focus on seeing relationships and proportions and measuring of relative distances between points and alignments. They got it! then when we gradually moved over to “filling in the details of images”, the kids had the skills to find their way. Thank you!!! Your gift of teaching me has come through to 30 young people!” Liz.
